Join us for the InfoSys Foundation USA Pathfinders Summer Institute: July 15-20!

Our workshop:

Everyday Computing: Integrating computational thinking into elementary mathematics

University of Illinois at Urbana-ChampaignUniversity of Chicago

Join us for a professional development (PD) opportunity that will take place at Indiana University-Bloomington. This PD focuses on strategies for elementary teachers who are interested in integrating computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) into their mathematics instruction. Special attention will be spent on instructional strategies and supports for academically diverse learners, including those at risk for academic failure, students with disabilities, and English language learners.

We will share lessons learned and suggestions for implementing combined mathematics and CS/CT activities that teach new mathematics concepts as well as reinforce already familiar mathematics.

Attend this PD to:

  • Access resources for integrating mathematics and computational thinking at the K–5 level
  • Develop materials tied to your mathematics curriculum
  • Explore already created K-5 math/CT lessons
  • Learn strategies to engage your academically diverse learners during integrated math/CT
  • Use an interactive Learning Trajectories tool to aid in integration efforts

We will also focus on general strategies for highlighting the CS/CT that is already happening in your mathematics classrooms.

Finally, if you are an elementary teacher with limited experience in the Scratch programming environment, a block-based programming language for young children, don't worry! We will teach you how to get started.
